Botox Treatment
Botox treatment is a form of cosmetic treatment. In which botulinum toxin is injected into muscles to achieve skin that is clearer, smoother and younger-looking.
How does the procedure work?
- Botulinum toxin blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine which normally causes muscle contraction.
- As a result, Botox relaxes muscles and helps relieve fine lines and wrinkles.
- Botox removes lines and wrinkles on the skin.
- Therefore, it improves the overall appearance of the skin.
Botox can be effectively used in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as :
- Soft tissue augmentation
- Skin resurfacing treatment
Furthermore, the procedures take 1 to 2 hrs for one session.
In fact, the number of sessions depends upon the requirement of the patient and the area to be treated.
Most patients usually need to touch up sessions every 3-4 months. Usually, dermatologists keep an interval of 3-4 months between two consecutive sessions.
Botox can be used to treat:
- Frown lines
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Brie lift
- Lateral orbital lines, in other words, “crow’s feet”
- Lower eyelid lines
- Perioral lines (smokers’ lines)
- Downturned mouth
- Dimpled chin
- Nasal (“bunny”) lines
- Platysmal (“turkey-neck”) bands
- Horizontal (“necklace”) lines
- Square jaw
- Jawline lifting
- Reduce excessive sweating over palms, feet, and underarms
Pre-Procedure Instructions
- Your doctor will explain the procedure to you and address all your concerns.
- After that, he will take your consent for the procedure.
Procedure For Botox
- Firstly, your doctor will assess your face
- Will apply anesthetic cream and ensure that all the equipment is sterilised.
- Likewise, he wears sterilised gloves and masks during the procedure.
- Once you are comfortable, he will inject botulinum toxin into the muscle over the treatment area.
- Moreover, different techniques help treat lines and wrinkles depending on the area of the face. This maintains the balance between achieving the results and preventing the side effects.
The average downtime after each session is 4 to 5 days.
You will begin noticing the results of Botox after 2-3 days to within two weeks.
Consequently, the results are optimum when the procedure is performed by an experienced dermatologist.
Care after Botox Treatment
- Avoid any vigorous activity for a month
However, following repeated injections over several years of treatment, the muscle weakens. And as a result, may prolong the effects of subsequent treatments to six months or longer.
Side effects of Botox Treatment
- Some patients experience swelling and discolouration over the treatment area due to bleeding under the skin.
- But it is temporary and you can put ice to relieve it. Your doctor may also prescribe medications to reduce pain and swelling.
Complications of Botox Treatment
Occasionally, depending on the area treated, some patients may also experience complications such as:
- Mild swelling
- Headache
- Brow drooping
- Eyelid drooping
- Drooping of the upper lip
- Worsening of under-eye puffiness
