Chemical Peels

Chemical peel treatment is a technique that helps to improve skin texture. A chemical peel solution  is applied to the required area of the skin for few minutes and then washed in case of strong peels or sometimes kept for few hours in case of stay on peels .As a result,skin gets exfoliated and tries to remove damaged cells  . In fact, it eventually peels off. Therefore, this gives rise to  fresh skin. This skin is often smoother and healthier.

Chemical peels help to treat a variety of skin issues. For example:

  • Acne
  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Mild acne scars
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Melasma

Types of chemical peels

The type of peel and its concentration  is decided according to the underlying condition which is to be treated.The depth of peel in skin depends on  its concentration.Let’s discuss the types of chemical peels and how they are important for our skin.

There are 3 types of peels, such as:

Superficial peels: One of the superficial peels is alpha-hydroxy acid. Superficial peels gently exfoliate the skin. They generally penetrate the outermost layer of skin.

Medium peels: The medium peels such as trichloroacetic or glycolic acid. These peels penetrate the middle and outer layers of skin. As a result, this helps to remove damaged skin cells.

Deep peels: Peels such as phenol or trichloroacetic acid. These peels fully penetrate the middle layer of the skin. As a result, this removes damaged skin cells. It should be administered only by a dermatologist.

Side effects of Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are safe and effective treatment modality ,but it should be done from an experienced doctor . They do cause mild irritation ,excess dryness most of time . If your skin is properly moisturised and protected from sun then you can have happy outcomes. Proper care is mandatory for desired results. However, patients may see some temporary side effects such as:

  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Stinging
  • Burning
  • Slight swelling

These can be taken care if showed to  doctors in earlier stages itself. Now, you have understood about chemical peels and its side effects. The downtime of any peel is mostly 4-6 days and again depends on the severity of peel and individual patient’s response .

Post-Procedure Care:

It is really important to take care of your skin after peels. As your skin is rejuvenating and becomes temporarily sensitive. You need to follow some post-care instructions , such as:

  • Sun protection: It is really important after peels. This is because the skin may become sun-sensitive for a few days after the procedure. You need to use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily for 3 times and usually with the gap of 3 hours .
  • Don’t wash your face with hot water: Yes it’s very important post-care, avoid  use hot water on your face, or on the area of the treatment for next 2 days. Use cold /normal water.
  • Apply moisturizer: Use of proper moisturizer is really important, to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Don’t use dry sauna: You need to avoid the sauna after work out for 2 days after the procedure of chemical peel.
  • Avoid exercises: It is important to avoid doing heavy workouts for 2-3 days . As sweating can block the pores of skin and irritate the skin .

Hence, it is your skin, so you need to take proper care. Chemical peels give good results from acne, pigmentation, acne dark spots, few acne  scars, tanning, melasma, etc.
