Under Eye Dark Circle

Under-eye dark circles are a non-hormonal skin condition. Both men and women can suffer from under-eye dark circles. The under-eye area may appear darker than the surrounding skin because of constricted blood vessels. It may also appear hyperpigmented because the skin below the eyes has thinned out.

Under-eye dark circles may range from purple or blue to dark brown or black, based on the skin color.

Dark circles rarely pose a health concern but people may wish to get them treated to improve their appearance. Under-eye dark circles may also be an indicator of an unhealthy lifestyle - individuals may need to improve their diet or sleep habits.

Skin tone: Under-eye dark circles are more common in individuals who have darker skin tones. This may be due to the excess melanin produced by individuals with a darker skin tone.

Treatment of dark Circles

Dermatologists treat Under-eye dark circles depending on the severity and patient’s skin type. Moreover, the choice of treatment modality depends on various factors. For instance:

  1. Cause of the dark circles,
  2. Condition of the patient’s skin
  3. Level of expectation from the treatment

There various treatments. Dermatologists recommend either of these treatments or a combination of them.

  • Topical ointments

These include creams that contain various skin lightening agents. For instance, hydroquinone, tretinoin, kojic acid, azelaic acid and so on.

  • Kojic acid

Kojic acid comes from two species of fungi. However, it may cause side effects like contact dermatitis and reddening of the skin.

  • Azelaic acid

It is safe to use azelaic acid for long periods of time, to treat hyperpigmentation.

  • Topical vitamin C

  • Retinoids

Retinol stimulates collagen production, increasing the thickness of the skin and improve the appearance of dark circles. Moreover, retinoids aid the rebuilding of dermal collagen. As a result, this improves vascular support, skin volume and firmness in the under-eye area.

  • Oral medications

Sometimes, under-eye dark circles occur due to allergies. Therefore, it is important to consult with the doctor to identify the allergen. In fact, the doctor may prescribe oral antihistamines to prevent the allergic effect.

Medical procedures

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP):

Dermatologists inject your own platelet-rich plasma into your skin. The growth factors and nutrients stimulate collagen production. As a result, this helps treat dark circles.

  • Chemical peel :

In this treatment, dermatologists apply chemical solutions of specific strengths to remove the upper, pigmented layers of the skin. Moreover, the peels are available in three strengths. The periorbital skin is so delicate. As a result, dermatologists recommend the mildest peels to treat dark circles.

  • Fractional Q-switch laser :

In this treatment, the laser has a long-pulsed laser light (1064nm) which targets the melanosomes. The melanin pigment absorbs this wavelength in the skin. It is a longer wavelength. As a result, the epidermis doesn't face much damage.

  • Fat transfer:

In this treatment, fat from the patient’s body is injected in the under-eye area. As a result, this restores volume and reduces the hollowed eye appearance by plumping up the area.

  • Fillers:

When sudden weight loss or skin thinning occurs, it can lead to under-eye dark circles. In such a case, fillers are a good treatment option. These fillers contain platelet-rich plasma or hyaluronic acid gel into the area under the eye.

  • Microdermabrasion -

In this treatment, micro-crystals are sprayed over the skin. As a result, this exfoliates the outer, pigmented layer of skin. There, new cells to grow.  Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are quite effective when hyperpigmentation is the cause for dark circles. Moreover, microdermabrasion can improve the penetration of chemical peels. This is a non-invasive procedure.

  • Laser skin resurfacing -

In this treatment, lasers are used to destroy the melanin that darkens the skin. It also tightens loose skin and removes excess skin that is responsible for the ‘baggy’ under-eye appearance. Laser skin resurfacing stimulates collagen, which thickens the skin under the eyes, thereby reducing dark circles.

  • Intense pulsed light (IPL) -

In this treatment, pulsed light is used to rejuvenate the skin and remove dark circles. It closes off any capillaries or vessels beneath the skin surface, causing them to fade.  In order to see noticeable results, one may require several sessions.

Eyelid surgery -

In this treatment, dermatologists carry out surgery to remove the excess skin around the eyes. As a result, the periorbital skin reshapes.
